Introduction:

Studies on islam from the so-called Western world، better known as Orientalist Studies، arouse the interest and curiosity of many researchers، especially those from the Muslim world.

The choice of the subject of this work was based on research on the Ibadites and their doctrine for many reasons، and I quote in particular the existence of many publications on the ibadite doctrine written in a foreign language which remains to be discovered and which also at risk of being forgotten.

As the title of the thesis indicates، our objective is to try to understand what the motivations are and why orientalists were interested in ibadism? Is this research objective and scientific or is it intended to meet political and colonial needs? In this regard، we opted for a descriptive and analytical methodology، with a critical study of the sources.

The results of our studies:

1. We cannot give a general judgment on Orientalist studies، because they are different in their origins and objectives.

2.The role of orientalists in the collection، preservation and translation of ibadite manuscripts should be recognized، as should the work of indexing certain libraries in the territories where documents are collected.

3.A distinction must be made between Orientalist schools which carry out research and analysis for scientific and academic reasons and those acting for reasons intended to serve colonial policies administering territories situated in Muslim countries.

4. The birth of a new style of orientalism، namely the "new revisionists" which is based on the theory of doubt about the sources of Islamic thought has been noted. This movement is particularly popular in the United States of America.

5.Orientalist studies have tried to study questions relating to the ibadite doctrine; on the historical، dogmatic، political، social and anthropological levels through the documents collected as well as some translation essays.
