biggest oil-producing regions and the Strait of Hormuz، on which the economies of the UK، Europe and Japan depended at the time.
This was alarming enough that Sultan Qaboos had no trouble getting British military support in his fight against the insurgency. But crucially، in addition to this support، Sultan Qaboos also sought military assistance from Iran which، when provided، enabled him to defeat the rebellion in V. This request for help was in effect an acknowledgement of Iran's standing as the region's then most powerful country، which in turn helped Oman to secure an agreement with Tehran on their border through the Strait of Hormuz. Incidentally، this also raised Oman's standing، as it was now being treated as an equal by the big local power.
With the rebellion defeated، Sultan Qaboos could now concentrate more fully on addressing the Sultanate's precarious living conditions، an effort that he had started as soon as he took power. The mood in the country was now markedly different، with a young، charismatic and humane leader announcing that، henceforth، Oman would be known as the Sultanate of Oman. One of his first measures was to establish girls' schools and gradually promote women's participation in economic and social life. A sign of his success is the fact that today women account for around *•% of college graduates in Oman." Furthermore، women have had the right to vote and run for parliamentary representation at the Majlis Al-Shura (State Consultative Council) since 1992، and to be part of the Majlis Al Dawla (State Council) since 1997.
