عمان والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية لهيرمان إيليتس- غير مفهرس
الجزء ١ · صفحة ٤٨A Sesquicentennial Commemoration By Ambassador Hermann Frederick Eilts
Introduction
This year 1983 marks the 150 th anniversary of the establishment of treaty relations between the United States of America and the Sultanate of Oman. That first treaty of Amity and Commerce، agreed to on September 21، 1833، represents the first such accord between the United States and an eastern Arab state. The U.S. had signed earlier treaties with Arab North African states، but these usually had been defensively motivated-specific- ally، to stop Barbary state piracy and the enslave- ment of American traders and seamen. By con- trast، the United States-Oman treaty was the first formal document with an Arab state solely rooted in peace and a desire for amicable relations and mutually beneficial trade.
The successful state visit to Washington in April 1983 of His Majesty، Sultan Qaboos bin Sa'id، as a guest of President Ronald Reagan، fittingly com- memorated that historic event and reaffirmed the common purposes that bind our two peoples.
