ANNUAL REPORT، 1969 - 70 bromont

The society for Libyan studies was founded on 4 June 1969. Since the war، as the account below will show، British scholars had been actively engaged in excavation and field work in Cyrenaica، Tripolitania and Fezzan. The work، it should be said، apart from that conducted under the direct auspices of the Department of Antiquities of Libya، was only possible at all because of the generous support of a number of individuals، learned bodies and charitable organizations. It was coming to be seen that steps ought to be taked to obtain a steady financial basis to enable further progress to be made. For a number of years it had been felt، both in Libya and in Britain، that there should be a properly constituted British centre for Libyan studies، either there or here، and the need became more obvious and pressing with time.

In 1969، moreover، there was also the urgent need to complete work left unfinished by Professor Richard Goodchild who from 1954 to 1967، with an interval in 1960 - 61، had been controller of Antiquities in Cyrenaica. During that period Goodchild had been the central and inspiring figure in Cyrenaican archaeology، and his death early in 1968 had been a great blow to Libyan studies. The Libyan authorities offered all possible assistance in completing his work، and in November made strong representations to various museums and university groups as well as to officials of the British Academy، to encourage more and better - equipped British expeditions to work in Libya.
