The Society hopes، if finances permit، to create an annual fellowship to be awarded in any branch of Libyan studies. It is very anxious to foster relations between Libyan and British scholars and wishes to have available small grants for Libyan students visiting Britain. In addition، in order to maintain contact with Libyan scholars and officials، it would try to invite one person to come from Libya each year for a lecture or study tour.

Field Work:

The Society's aim is to continue develop existing schemes of research and to undertake new ones which seem important. Sums of money will be needed for basic equipment، especially the purchase of vehicles which are an essential requirement for field work in the country.

London Activities:

The Society has an Assitant secretary، Miss M. A. Meagher، who is paid a small honorarium. The office is based in the Institute of Archaeology and office expenditure in general is small. Lecture - meetings are held in London chiefly at the Institute of Archaeology، two such meetings، in addition to the Annual General Meeting، have been held so far: on 20 February 1970، Mr. J. B. Ward - Perkins، Director of the British School at Rome، spoke on Early Christian Churches of Cyrenaica and there was a most attractive exhibition of drawings largely by Miss Sheila Gibson in the entrance - hall of the Institue. On 4 June 1970، the president gave an illustrated lecture on a little - known episode in the career James Bruce، who visited Libya in 1766. Library:

The nucleuse of this library consists of some 200 books، chiefly concerned with Libyan archaeology، which once belonged to Professor Goodchild. They hadbeen sold to Messrs. Blackwell and were purchased by the Society for L 440. The funds to make the original purchase were lent by the Goodchild Memorial Commitee، and were refunded by the Society when money became available. The Goodchild library has already received a number of additions، notably the Report of the Joint Libyan University London University Research Project in Libya presented by the staff of the School of Oriental and African Studies. The Society also intends to the library as much as possible and to allocate a sum for the binding of books، An honorary librarian، Miss belinda Barratt، has been appointed، and the books are housed in the library of the Institute of Archaeology. The arduous task of initial cataloguing and arranging of the books was very kindly undertaken by Miss Joan du plat Taylor and her staff، to would like to express the Society's gratitude. The library is open for consultation on application to the librarian and books may be borrowed by members of the Society. A list is given below (pp. 19 ff).
