الجزء ١ · صفحة ٣٢

… It is also appropriate to point out that، for the Ib~‡‚s at least، this work is a very valuable compilation of the opinions of their real founder J~bir b. Zayd that are transmitted by his great student ?um~m b. al-S~|ib، a chain that has been long described and mentioned، but on only the slightest evidence outside this text(1) . It refutes many denials، that were regarded reasonable before this text became available، about the existence of such a chain and about the role of ?um~m in transmitting the knowledge of J~bir and the basis of his madhhab.(2) Although ?um~m’s role in this book is no more than a transmitter، this is particularly what needs to be proved. It testifies that Abƒ `Ubayda is not the only transmitter of J~bir b. Zayd، as is the situation in the already published Musnad al-Rab‚`، where there are no more than three traditions reported on ?um~m’s authority. Furthermore، this work، by showing the role of ?um~m، fills the gap in the chain of the authorities of the Ib~‡‚ religious roots (silsilat nasab al-d‚n)(3)

(1) Al-Shamm~kh‚ for example says when talking about ?um~m: “ and what he (?um~m) recorded and transmitted from J~bir was greater than that of Abƒ `Ubayda…” al-siyar، vol.1، p.81. He also describes his answers when he replaced im~m J~bir in one ™ajj season that his answers were: I heard J~bir saying، or he was asked or I heard him،… and he was the transmitter of J~bir ( R~wiyat J~bir)” ibid، 1/82
