Ethics and Values
Ethics is commonly defined as a system of moral principles that guide what is considered right or wrong in human conduct. In the modern context، ethics is often understood as rational، human-centered، and context- specific، shaped by philosophy، law، culture، or social norms (MacIntyre، 2007; Singer، 2011). However، such an understanding is frequently narrow and utilitarian، as it overlooks dimensions of transcendence، accountability before God، and the process of spiritual purification.
In contrast، the Islamic tradition offers a more holistic concept through akhlaq. Linguistically derived from khuluq (character، disposition)، akhlaq refers to an inner state that shapes outward behavior (al-Ghaz?l?، 2013). It is deeply embedded in human nature and requires conscious nurturing through faith and practice. Unlike ethics that are defined merely by social norms or aimed at securing social harmony، akhlaq emphasizes accountability before Allah، with taqwa (God- consciousness) as its foundation; the integration of inner and outer conduct through ikhl?s (sincerity) and i?s?n (excellence); and the ultimate pursuit of Allah's pleasure (ri?? Allah). Thus، akhlaq represents a comprehensive framework that unifies belief (im?n)، practice ('amal)، and spirituality (i? s?n) (Nasr، 2002; Ramadan، 2010).
