The Religio-Political groups in Oman during the ya'rubid dynasty (1034 - 1162 AH / 1624 - 1749 AD)

Farouk Omar Fawzi *

ABSTRACT

When the Ya'rubids took power in 1624، Oman was in a chaotic state. The Ibadi Imamate was weak، and the tribal leaders retained absolute control of their tribal areas. During the Nabahina muluk، the conditions were ever worse، and their supremacy was never challenged. The election of Nasir b. Murshid al- Ya'rubi resulted in uniting the tribes under central government and directing a successful operations against the Portuguese. However، during the period of later Ya'rubi Imams a controversy occurred among ambitious members of the rulling family، which led to a difference of opinion between the tribal leaders and the principal Ibadi 'Ulama. The out come was a civil war which ultimately led to Persian Occupation of Oman and the downfall of the Ya'rubi state. In conclusion it was obvious that the three factions which contested to again authority were: the ya'rubids، the Ibadi 'Ulama and last but not least the tribe. The tribe was an important factor in the struggle for power، simply because it was needed by the other two factions، namely the ya'rubids and the Ibadi 'Ulama.
