" Musnad Al-Rabi` ibn Habib Al-Ibady - critique study"

Abstract:

Al-Ibadiyyah was one of the Islamic sects that relied in its deduction of rules on the books of Hadiths which were well-known at the People of the Sunnah. They did not have famous Hadith books but in the late centuries when their book "Al-Jami` Al-Sahih Musnad Al-Rabi` ibn Habib" came to existence، which they claimed to be the most authentic book after the Qur'an.

That Book could not be authentic due to the following reasons: 1) It did not have an original manuscript to use for authentication. 2) The status of Alwargelany was unknown. The Book did not contain a chain of narrations tracing back to him and there was no connection between Alwargelany and Al-Rabi` ibn Habib.

3) The status of Al-Rabi` ibn Habib was unknown as well as his Sheikh Abu 'Ubaydah Muslim ibn Abu Karimah.

4) There was interruption in the chain of narration between Abu 'Ubaydah and Jabir ibn Zayd because there was no evidence that Abu 'Ubaydah was the student of Jabir ibn Zayd.

5) The presence of severe interruptions in many of the higher chains of transmission from Al-Rabi' forth.

6) The book did not show up in the era of narration and criticism. Moreover، the old Sheikhs of Ibadiyyah did not use the Hadiths of that book as proofs to what they believe; which was contradictory to the beliefs of others.

7) The late Ibadiyyah apologized for not showing the book to the scholars of Hadith because of their fear of the brutal governments. That claim was refuted because there was a chance of showing it up during the time of the Rustumiyyah State، which ruled more than a hundred and thirty years.

8) This book was marked by containing Hadiths that had some Shar`y rulings which the nation needed and the scholars of Hadith were keen to know about. If those Hadiths were narrated at that time، the scholar of Hadith would not have missed them. Moreover، the book contained a number of Hadiths that contradicted authentic ones. Allah knows the best!
