عمان في عيون الرحالة البريطانيين

الفصل الثاني: ارتحال إلى التخوم رحلات قصيرة وصور متفرقة

تشارلز رائبون لوو، الملازم الإنجليزي في البحرية الهندية ومؤلّف العديد من كتب الرحلات (1). يبدو أنه كان ميالاً إلى الجدل وكارهاً شعوب الشرق. فيبدأ وصفه لما شاهده في عمان بالهجوم على الرحالة الرومانسيين الذين عدّوا الشرق إلهاماً لهم، قائلاً إنه بدخول الخليج العربي عبر مضيق هرمز يكون الرحالة قد وصلوا إلى شواطئ بلدان طالما عُدَّت مقصداً للرحالة الحالمين»، ويؤكد أنه أن الشرق كله كان لأولئك الرومانسيين زاخراً بإيحاءات مع شاعرية، كان لبلاد فارس والبلاد العربية النصيب الأوفر من هذه الحظوة؛ فقد كانت المساكن الأثيرة لربات الشعر». ثم ينقض

لم يحدّد لوو السنة التي زار فيها عمان، إلا أنه ذكر في كتابه «أرض الشمس» أنه جاء عمان في السنوات الأخيرة من حكم السيد سعيد بن سلطان، الذي توفي في عام 1856.
