… All the examples mentioned in this section (assassination of `Uthm~n، revolts of œalˆa and al-Zubayr، the battle of al-jamal، the conflict of ^iff‚n and the use of kuff~r and mun~fiqƒn) present what are considered by non-Ib~‡‚s as Kh~rij‚ links. Ib~‡‚s on the contrary rejected this connecting of them to the Khaw~rij by showing that they were not the only ones to criticize the general political atmosphere and that they did not invent the terms they used since these terms where used by the Prophet and his Companions. And they hold the position that sharing some stances with the Khaw~rij should not be interpreted as an approval of all their views، and thus should not lead to include Ib~‡‚s in the negative image of the violent Kh~rijism of the Az~riqa and Najdiyya.
